Face vs Sun: 4 Summer tips for your Face
1. Wear sunscreen (preferably a mineral sunscreen)
Our first summer skin-care tip is by far the most important: Wear sunscreen every, single day.The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. all year round; even cloudy days don’t fully block the harmful UVA/UVB rays during the day. This is why it’s so critical that you apply sun protection, rain or shine, every few hours.
We suggest a light-weight mineral sunscreen, like TiZo, which provides the best protection from the sun’s rays.
2. Protect your scalp
Our scalp is an oftentimes forgotten part of our sun-protection plan. If you’re rocking a bald head, you have two choices:
Your first option is to wear a hat. For maximum sun defence, choose a hat with a wide brim that will protect your neck and ears.
Your second option, if you’re not the hat-wearing type, is to apply sunscreen to the top of your head, ears and back of your neck. Choose a sunscreen that won’t drip into your eyes when you sweat. These sunscreens are usually in the form of a powder (e.g. Sunforgettable brush-on sunscreen) or a silicone-based product (e.g. TiZo).
For all the coifed guys out there, you might have to sacrifice having “hat-hair” if you’re going to be in the sun for a while. Alternatively, there are some spray-on sunscreens that claim to be scalp and hair safe that won’t sacrifice your hairstyle.
3. Cleanse daily
Summer means more sweat, oil production, and sunscreen. For these reasons, we recommend you wash your face before bed every day. Your facial cleanser should leave your skin feeling clean and dewy soft. Whether you use a milk or gel cleanser, ensure that your skin does not feel tight or “squeaky clean.”
#4 Moisturize and hydrate
A common mistake many tend to make in the summer is to stop moisturizing. You feel oilier than usual and sweat more, so you might think your skin is taking care of itself. This isn’t the case, your skin is still suffering from the dehydrating effects of the sun’s UV rays, air conditioners, chlorine in pools, and frequent showers.
Dehydration is simply a lack of water in the upper layers of the skin and it can happen to anyone, even someone with oily skin. We suggest that you moisturize your skin in the morning and after you wash your face throughout the day. Use a lightweight hydrating gel instead of a heavier, oilier moisturizer. If you need an extra boost of hydration, consider adding a serum or hydrating mist to your regime with active ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe.
